The next day arrives and I find my familiars in the living room.
“We’re going out for the day, you should be safe here. We’ve already told people who may show up that we won’t be home” the other grabs the car keys and the make their way towards the car.
“Have a good day, we’ll see you later”.
I’m home alone for the first time since my change. ‘I need to lay low’ I decide. I nap throughout the warm, sunny day. I hear several animals pass though the yard, mostly squirrels and birds, But the occasional neighbor cat also. It’s amusing on this boring day.
I decide to lay in my room. Before too long the warm air has a slight nip to it, and it feels wonderful. The chill it gives me however, is far to deep just to be from a late summer’s night. I’m walking around the house making sure it’s secure. Something just doesn’t feel right.
My familiar’s arrive home after dark tonight.
“What’s wrong with you? You seem upset about something” they ask me as I pace the house. ‘My hackles are raised, but what could this possibly mean?’ My familiars continue with their nightly routine, I’m remaining on guard. The atmosphere still radiates an ominous chill, which I can feel in my bones. My instincts haven’t led me wrong so far, there is no way I was ignoring them now.
“Won’t you just relax?” I respond with a look of discontent. Every sound outside I hear is followed by my own low rumble growls.
“Guess that’s a no? Well goodnight. Try to relax, you’re starting to put me on edge.”
My familiars climb the staircase for the last time tonight. I still cannot shake this chill down my spine. I hear something, right now. The front door lock, it’s jiggling. I hear very hushed whispers outside the door. There’s two of them and they are going to have to go through me.
I smell them now, one is faintly familiar, the other I do not recognize. The lock’s springs are snapping, I hear them one by one. With each snap, the chill in my spine gets colder and colder. I swear my feet are numb in this moment. The corners of my vision turn red. The blood is rushing to my face, and the adrenaline is kicking in.
The door cracks open and I catch a quick glimpse on the intruders. One I immediately recognize as the ACO from the other day. The other I assume must be an accomplice of his. The house has a faint light from the kitchen. I know I’ll have more then a home advantage here, My vision is heightened in low light. I know they don’t have any advantages, but I don’t smell much fear in their bodies.
The ACO sticks his head through first with his accomplice following close behind. They turn their back to the house, so sure they are undetected. I take the chance and jump into the center of the floor. They hear me and spin around.
“Well look who it is. I’ve been looking for you, wolf. You know me I’m sure of that”. The ACO starts his unnecessary introduction. I’m growling as ferociously as possible, a rumble that is virtually making the walls rumble with it.
“You may be wondering who my friend is here though, He’s an animal test research specialist. Simply put, someone like yourself does not want to meet.” he finishes. They move closer to me, I jump back. Now snarling, I consider this they’re warning. ‘He was no idea who he is dealing with. He thinks I’m just a wolf, with little comprehension skills, let alone full knowledge to back me up. Little does he know, I understand perfectly.’ There is no way I’m going quietly.
“So you want to make this interesting? Have it your way then.”
The two of them are attempting to corner me, it’s not so simple. I leap over them and land on the kitchen countertop. I need to use this darkness to my advantage also. I make my way to the darkest corner of the house, near the opposing side of the stair case and we continue there. My vision is almost completely red now.
“You want to know why we want you so bad, wolf? Wolves went extinct in these parts many decades ago. You are an abnormality in itself. You must be examined and eradicated from this area. Your kind doesn’t belong here, beast”. The ACO snaps. “ Now come quietly or regret it.”
I lunge for his arm. I am so mad. ‘How dare they come into this house, disrupt our lives, and try to take me down?!’ I make contact. I look into his eyes for a fraction of a second, they are clouded with a smug confidence. ‘What have I done?’ He grabs my frame and I’m thrown back into the light of the kitchen.
I hear a noise from upstairs. My familiars have woken, this will only escalate things.  I rear up only to find the accomplice behind me. His boot’s on my back paws, crushing weight pinning me to the floor where I landed. I’m pawing and clawing for my life on the linoleum floor. It seems like there is no use. The ACO slowly walking towards me.
I’m looking past him and see the horror carved in my familiar’s faces, the intruders haven’t heard them stir. Now they are frozen, watching this scene unfold in front of them. The ACO grabs a kitchen knife and puts it to my neck.
“Easy enough wouldn’t you say?” the ACO asks in a cocky tone to his accomplice. A quick laugh emerged from his accomplice.
He runs it down my fur and I squirm. I cause him to dodge most of my neck and it slices my shoulder instead. Blood puddles are spreading on the floor As we continue to fight. I no longer see my familiars, what might have happened to them, I worry. The ACO tried to slice me dead again, each time I dodge, each time I get slightly weaker.
I grab hold of his wrist in my jaws and don’t let go. It’s breaking skin and his accomplice is torn between shaking me off, and keeping me pinned to prevent further damage. I claw as hard as I can, for it’s the only thing I can do. The intruders and I are still fighting, they have resorted to physical blows while I still have a firm and tearing grasp on the man’s wrist. His own grip has been steadily weakening due to my damaging scissor like bite.
“Do it, now!” yells the ACO.
The accomplice pulls out a large syringe and stabs me with it. My vision is fading, my grip is loosening. I’m losing control of m body, and I’m losing it fast. I look past the intruders and I see ,through all the commotion, my familiars. They snuck outside by their van. I can only assume they took as much evidence as they could. I fought as hard as I could. Now I know I’m being taken, I just hope I am found.
I am conscious but unable to move. The intruders are now my captors. They’re hauling my limp body outside into the darkness. My familiars disappeared into the shadows once more. ‘I know my fate, I just hope they don’t meet a similar end’. My eyes almost close, I feel so weak.
“Help me secure this damn animal , will you?” the ACO asks in a gruff tone.
There’s nothing I can do. I lie helplessly while my captors throw me into the back of the van. The sliding door to their van is left open for a moment as my captors regroup just around the corner of the van. I see my familiars again in the shadow of the black sky. They can tell I‘m scared. I try to slide out of the van. My captors won’t take any chances with me.
All my familiars can do is look on in horror. I desperately hope I can be rescued this time. I whimper, this is all too much. One of my captors slams the van door shut, and starts the engine. ‘It’s all over now. I’m going to die in the arms of these evil beings.’ These thoughts are running through my mind in a constant stream.
I hear my captors up in front, arguing. ‘Something about the car.. It won’t move?’ One of them gets out and starts pounding on different things underneath the car.
“Steering is shot, and I suggest not moving the van any further, one of these wheels is about to fall clean off. It looks like some one has been tampering with it” the assistant calls out to the ACO. The ACO is furious, I can feel it, and I can hear him. They are stranded, and they know it.
“Grab the damn wolf, we will just have to go it on foot. We need to leave before the home owners see us taking the wolf away.” yells the ACO.
The van door opens and they pull me out sharply. And begin walking briskly towards the end of the driveway. I look on to the house, I hope this is not the last time I see it, the outdoors, or a last glimpse of my freedom.
“Where do you think you are taking her?” one of my familiars bellows. Both familiars stand unified at the end of the dark driveway.
“Mind your own business. It’s coming with us”, shouts the ACO. “It needs to be fully tested and eradicated”.
“And just what is your logic behind this?”
“Lets put it this way, a big black wolf appears out of thin air, and a local person is missing. All this is reportedly to have happened in a day of each other. This beast is to be examined. I knew it was hiding in the garage the other day. I just knew better then to take it down alone, so I called in some help. Now here we all are.”
“Where is the proof? You come into our house and remove this creature. She would never harm any one! You will not be taking this wolf with you.”
My captors look confused at the moment, but decide to push through their barricade. They do not get the chance, When they get close enough both of my captors get blows to the back of their skulls. They land on my hurting body. It’s going to fast to comprehend what is happening.
My familiars snatch me from underneath my captors and carry me to the house. They’re turning the corner around the house and now I see. I see a cruiser silently parked in the blackness of the dirt road. I see two officers securing those two, and at the same time the officer’s heavy boots are pressing them down.
They get me to the kitchen and flip the light on. I see my blood everywhere. It takes all three of us back for the moment. They lay me on the counter and watch the officers outside. I’m looking now too, the intruders try their hardest to convince the officer to let them go. Finally the officers load the intruders and the danger passes.
Part 6, a fairly exciting part with a fight scene too.
